How to Start Lifting Weights

Never touched a barbell? Good, you're exactly who this is for. Here's how to start lifting with zero experience, without copying random videos or wandering the gym floor hoping for the best.

01Why lift at all?

Because lifting is what changes your shape. Cardio burns energy while you're doing it. Lifting builds muscle, and muscle is what gives you curves, strength, a faster resting metabolism and bones that hold up for decades. If your goal is to look "toned", that word just means having muscle and not too much covering it. There's no toning without lifting.

02Machines are a fine place to start

Nobody hands out medals for starting with a barbell. Machines guide the movement for you, which means you can work hard safely while you learn. A brilliant first month is a simple full-body routine, two or three times a week:

Your first routine

  • Leg press — 3 sets of 10-12
  • Seated row — 3 sets of 10-12
  • Chest press — 3 sets of 10-12
  • Lat pulldown — 3 sets of 10-12
  • Hip abduction — 2 sets of 15
  • Glute bridge — 3 sets of 12

That's it. Six movements, under an hour, everything covered. After four to six weeks, you start swapping in free-weight versions: goblet squats, dumbbell Romanian deadlifts, hip thrusts.

03How heavy is heavy enough?

The honest test: the last two reps of each set should feel like work. If you finish a set of twelve knowing you had another ten in you, the weight's too light to change anything. If your form falls apart, it's too heavy. Start light to learn the movement, then add weight each week. Writing your numbers down is the single most useful habit in the gym.

04What to ignore

Ignore anyone selling "long, lean muscles" (not a thing), "toning workouts" with 3kg dumbbells and fifty reps (a waste of your hour), and the idea that you need to be fit before you start lifting (backwards: lifting is how you get fit). And ignore the fear of the weights section. It's a room full of people concentrating on themselves.

05The first-month rules

Keep it this simple

  • Two or three sessions a week, every week. Consistency beats intensity
  • Same routine each time so you can see your numbers climb
  • Last two reps hard, form held together
  • Eat enough, especially protein. Training on fumes builds nothing
