Fat Loss Without Crash Diets

If diets worked, you'd only have needed one. The fact that you've done several tells you everything about the method, not about you. Here's how fat loss actually works when you want the results to stay.

01The only rule that's actually a rule

Fat loss happens when you consistently eat a bit less energy than you use. Every diet that has ever worked, keto, fasting, slimming clubs, juice nonsense, worked through that one mechanism, dressed up in different rules. Once you know that, you can stop renting someone else's rules and build an approach you can actually live with.

02Why crash diets keep failing you

Slashing your food in half produces fast scale movement, and then three problems. You lose muscle along with fat, so you end up a smaller, softer version of the same shape. You're miserable and ravenous, so adherence collapses, usually within weeks. And you've learned nothing about eating normally, so the weight returns the moment life does. Rinse, repeat, blame yourself. The method was the problem.

03What to do instead

The sustainable version

  • A modest deficit, roughly 300-500 calories below maintenance, not half your food
  • Protein high to protect muscle and keep you full
  • Keep lifting. Training tells your body the muscle stays; the deficit takes the fat
  • Aim to lose around 0.5-1% of bodyweight a week. Slower than you want, faster than another restart

04Yes, you can still have a life

Meals out, a takeaway, drinks with your friends on a Saturday: all of it fits inside a sensible weekly budget, planned rather than "ruined and start again Monday". The all-or-nothing switch is what's actually been sabotaging you. A weekend that goes 20% over doesn't undo a week that went well; quitting over it does.

05About the scale

Your weight swings daily with water, hormones, salt, sleep and where you are in your cycle. A morning spike after a restaurant meal is not fat; fat doesn't arrive overnight. Watch the trend across weeks, take photos and measurements, and notice how your clothes fit. Those tell the truth. Tuesday's number on its own does not.
