Online coaching explainedHow Does Online Fitness Coaching Work?
You send me your week, I send you a plan, and every seven days we look at what happened and adjust. That is the whole model. Here is what each part looks like in practice, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you pay for it.
01It starts with a conversation, not a form
Before I write anything, we talk. A free consultation call, twenty minutes or so, about your goal, your training history, any injuries, what you eat now, and what a normal week actually looks like. Not the week you wish you had. The one with the shifts, the commute and the Tuesday you always end up eating at your desk.
That conversation is where most of the plan gets decided. A programme that ignores your real week fails in week two. I know because I trained through six years of NHS shifts and a long commute before I coached anyone else through it.
02Your plan lands in an app
Within a few days you get your training programme in a coaching app on your phone. Every session is laid out: the exercises, the sets, the reps, the tempo, the rest. Every exercise has a video demonstration, so you are never standing on the gym floor guessing what a Romanian deadlift is supposed to look like.
Alongside it you get nutrition targets. Calories and protein that fit the goal and, more importantly, fit you. No banned foods, no meal plan you will resent by Thursday. If you want structure I will build you meals; if you would rather track, I will show you how to do it in four minutes a day.
03You train and log it
You go to the gym, follow the session, and log your weights and reps in the app. That log is not busywork. It is the only way either of us can see whether the plan is working. Weights going up week on week means the programme is doing its job. Weights stalling tells me something needs to change: the volume, the exercise, or more often the food.
If a lift feels wrong, you film a set and send it. I watch it and reply with what to fix. That is the closest thing to standing next to you, and for a lot of exercises it is enough.
04The weekly check-in is the product
This is the bit that separates coaching from a PDF. Once a week you send your check-in: weight, measurements or photos if we are using them, how training went, how the food went, sleep, stress, and anything that got in the way. I read all of it, look at your logs, and reply with what happens next.
Sometimes that is "keep going, nothing changes." Sometimes it is a calorie adjustment, a swap for an exercise that is not landing, or a straight conversation about why three sessions became one. Knowing someone is going to look at your week is a remarkable motivator. I am lovely about it, right up until you need me not to be.
05Between check-ins, you can still reach me
Form checks, questions, a wobble on a Saturday night, a win you want to tell someone about. Message support is included because that is where most people come unstuck: not on the plan, but in the gap between one check-in and the next.
06What I am doing on my side
People sometimes imagine the coach sends a plan and disappears. Here is my week for one client: reviewing their logs, reading the check-in, adjusting the programme in the app, replying to messages, watching lift videos, and every few weeks rebuilding the plan so it keeps progressing rather than repeating. Multiply that by everyone I coach and it is a full-time job, which is why I cap how many online clients I take.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits women who can get themselves to a gym but want to stop guessing what to do when they get there. Busy people. Shift workers. Anyone who has tried plans off the internet and drifted within a fortnight because nobody was looking.
It does not suit complete beginners who are nervous about the gym floor and would benefit from a coach physically next to them for the first few weeks. For that, one to one training in Durham or Newcastle is the better start, and plenty of my clients begin in person and move online once the technique is in.
If you want the honest comparison, read personal training versus online coaching. If you want to know what it costs, that is here.
Questions people ask
Do I need a gym for online coaching?
No. I programme around whatever you have: a commercial gym, a small local one, a home set-up with a few dumbbells, or a hotel gym when you travel. The plan changes, the coaching does not.
How often do I hear from my coach?
With me, every week at your check-in, and in between whenever you message. Some coaches check in monthly. Ask before you sign up, because it is the thing that decides whether online coaching works for you.
How long does it take to see results?
Strength and energy shift within a few weeks. Visible body composition changes usually take eight to twelve weeks of consistent work. Anyone promising faster is selling something.
